Chances are you probably don't know. Well today I would like share an awesome tool that I discovered while trying to clean up my CSS code on a very large project. If your like me, then you may like to keep your site files super clean and organized. We'll, you'd never know what CSS rules are not used unless you manually went through the entire site and checked the site components against the CSS code. In my case this probably would have taken all day, if not two.

I did a little searching around the interwebs and found Unused CSS, the perfect tool to detect unused CSS rules.

Here is a breif rundown of what it can do.

Explore the pages of your site automatically, find the unused CSS selectors and create new clean CSS files you can download

Login and explore the pages requiring authentification. It will then check unused CSS rules.

Search for CSS rules in javascript files

Force the list of CSS selectors to keep

Preview the change made to the CSS file

Follow CSS import commands

You see, a lot of times you will create CSS rules in your pages, then later remove the components from your site. But you dont take the time to go through the CSS code and remove unused rules. I recently used it and discovered that I only need about 72% of one of my style sheets was needed.

Removing the un-needed selectors had actually made my site load faster and I also knew for my own peace of mind that the code was "clean"

Here is a screenshot taken from inside the Unused CSS admin panel:

It only took a matter of minuets, saving me hours upon hours of boring sifting.

If you have been looking for a tool like this, I urge you to go check out Unused CSS.

The topic has evolved into a science, which makes the title of the infographic you see here so appropriate.

Saturday at noon is the absolute best time to post on Facebook, according to the following infographic from KissMetrics that uses data supplied by Dan Zarella.

We’ve got the Facebook portion of the infographic graphic, but the original version compares timing on Facebook with Twitter, and so does the expert analysis by our sibling blog Social Times. Let us know what you think by posting in the comments section.

As social media sites continue to grow, many retailers have been forced to build internal teams, bring in social media "experts" and other consultants or dump the responsibilities of tweeting and updating their Facebook page on one individual within the company. If they didn't, they risked losing potential customers to the competition. Or that's how the story was spun, anyway -- often by those who would benefit most from larger social media teams. We were never really sure how much a Facebook fan was actually worth. That is, we had no way to measure the return on investment (ROI).

Now, that data is starting to be compiled. But it's not an easy process -- and the specifics are more than a little complicated.

Experian Hitwise analyst Robin Goad has taken one convincing stab at putting a value on the Facebook fan. After a considerable amount of research, Goad, the research director at one branch of the global online competitive intelligence service, determined that one Facebook fan is worth about 20 additional visits to a site over the course of a year!

Here, the layman's version of how Goad got to that number: After partnering with Techlightenment, a full-service social media agency, Hitwise collected Facebook data on the top 100 retailers as ranked in the Hitwise Shopping and Classified category for the 12 weeks ending June 18. Before this, they developed benchmarks to compare their data against. The chosen benchmarks were the number of visits to the websites of those retailers and the number of Facebook fans before Hitwise begin collecting data. Hitwise also "looked at the propensity for people to search for those retail brands after a visit to Facebook using our Search Sequence tool," Goad explained on the Hitwise blog, which also includes charts and graphs that can be used to further explore this data. They found that Web surfers are 54 percent more likely to search for a retailer after visiting their Facebook page!!

Another interesting data point that came out of this research: The top retailers, even without a Facebook presence and its accompanying fans, can expect an average of 62,000 visits driven by Facebook traffic every month.

When it comes to joining an online social network, quality not quantity is what you should aim for. There are some great quality websites like Facebook, Orkut, Linked In, and Friendster. However you should join the one that best suits your needs. When it comes to online social networking, keeping all your chickens in one basket may turn out to be a much better strategy as it keeps you from spreading yourself really thin.

Facebook has been the best of the lot and that has been because it meets my personal and professional needs.

It wasn’t really difficult for me to select Facebook, because all my friends are already there! You can see which site has the most of your friends and start off on that site too.

I am going to share some tips on how I was able to use Facebook successfully and I am sure you will agree that these are generic enough for you to use them to good effect. So read on.

1. Create a great Profile: Most people you encounter on Facebook do not have a complete profile and many don’t even have a picture! So when someone does, people take notice. This is the reason why your profile should be complete and easy to browse through. It should be professional but not too formal, include a nice picture and most importantly include your website and personal interests. Including personal interests lets other users connect to you in a personal way which is very important in order to make the most of social networking.

2. Create a big network: Once you are done with creating a great profile, next step is to create a great network. Start off by adding your friends and then look for their friends that have similar interests. The bigger your circle of friends, the greater will be your reach and the more effective you’re marketing efforts.

3. Talk to friends: You have a great profile, your network is building, and so what’s next? You have to start connecting with people now and the best way to do this is on Facebook. Start off by sending out messages to people. A lot of people are quite addicted to Facebook and check their messages very frequently. They also make a habit of responding to these messages. By sending messages you become an active member of the Facebook community and it helps you gain popularity.

4. Hand out some Gifts: One of my favorite things on Facebook is to receive gifts. What if they are virtual, it’s the thought that counts, right? Giving virtual gifts is a very cool feature of Facebook and who doesn’t enjoy being gifted? So show your appreciation and let others get that warm feeling too. Give out a few virtual gifts to your friends, appreciate and be appreciated.

5. Share applications on Facebook: Facebook has a large number of applications that you can use to listen to music, play games etc. Start using a few that you find interesting and then invite your friends to use the ones that you enjoy. This also helps you establish a connection with your friends like the virtual gifts.

6. Join groups in Facebook: There are hundreds of groups on Facebook and each of them is focused on a specific niche. You can join one that meets your interests and be assured that you will meet people with similar goals and interests which will further help you build a good network.

7. Create a group: When you are active on groups for a while you will find patterns like what makes a group tick? Groups that people are looking for but not finding elsewhere etc. Use this information to create a group of your own, make it a bit unique and fun. Invite friends to join in and in no time you will have a vibrant community.

8. Publicizing your Events through Facebook: If you have a good and large social network on Facebook, there is no better tool to introduce your new product or service than by creating an events page and inviting your friends to view it and even get feedback from them on the event! This helps spread the word of mouth for your new services and it can create quite a buzz sometimes.

9. Syndicate your Blog: Regular bloggers can use RSS to link their blogs to their Facebook profile. So every time you add an entry to your blog, it will start appearing on your profile page. This is a great way to keep your profile “fresh” and have your friends keep coming back to your profile over and over again.

10. Make a community: At the end of it all, you should get a feeling of being a part of a community and your friends should get the same feeling. You should be active, have a lot of comments on other’s pages and give feedback to them. Introduce people to each other and have a lot of fun.

So there you have it, a few tips for building a great brand using these Facebook Marketing tips and a great network of friends while at the same time promoting your products and services and having fun doing it. Use these tips wisely and with a little patience they will surely reward you.

With everybody and their moms being on Facebook these days, we felt it’s time to highlight 20 new FB tips that you might not be aware of. Without further ado, lets get started with the best Facebook tricks of 2011!

#1 Enable HTTPS for better security

If you access Facebook frequently from public wi-fi hotspots, or even your college network, you will be surprised to know that it’s extremely easy for others to snoop on your Facebook data. To avoid this, you should turn on the secure HTTPS option of Facebook right now. Go to Account –> Account Settings –> Account Security, and enable the Secure Browsing (https) option.

#2 Use Facebook Chat outside Facebook with IMO.im

Want a quick chat with a friend, without getting sucked into all the distractions of the Facebook site? Head over to imo.im, log in with your Facebook account, and you will have your chat going in no time.

#3 Bring back the old photo viewer to Facebook

According to many Facebook users, the new lightbox-style photo viewer is ugly and distracting. If you couldn’t agree more, just download this tiny userscript to revert back to the plain old photo viewer.

#4 Increase font size

Facebook recently decreased the font size across the entire site, making us all want to poke our eyes out while trying to read the text. To get back to the old font size, you can simply hit the Ctrl + + (Cmd + + on OS X) key combination on any web browser. Do note that this may break the site design, especially if you have enabled the “Zoom Text Only” option. For increasing font size without breaking anything, try the F.B. Purity extension mentioned below.

#5 Remove yourself from spammy groups

The really horrible thing about Facebook Groups is that any friend can add you to any group, without your confirmation. If you have been added to a spammy group, click on the See All link on the left sidebar of your Home page, scroll down to the My Groups list, hover over the group you want to remove, and click on the cross icon that appears. Once removed, no one can automatically add you to that particular group again (although you can manually request to be added later).

#6 Remove Facebook clutter with F.B. Purity

If you have many active friends on Facebook, your newsfeed is likely a hodgepodge of links, status messages, photo albums, game requests, spammy apps, likes, group discussions, and other stuff. With the F.B. Purity browser extension, you will have fine grained control over what to show and what not to show on your Facebook newsfeed and profile. F.B. Purity also gets rid of the hideous Facebook ads to further clean up the site.

#7 Use Facebook Messages as a lightweight email service

The recently overhauled Facebook Messages can serve as a sufficiently good email service for people who have to deal with only a few emails everyday, and are overwhelmed by Gmail or Hotmail. If you haven’t got the new Messages in your Facebook yet, head over to this page, and request for an invitation at the bottom of the page. Once approved, you can get your own @facebook.com ID and use it like any other email service.

#8 Automatically post your favourite YouTube videos to Facebook

If you’re an active YouTube viewer, and would like your favourite videos to appear on Facebook automatically, here’s a little setting for you. Go to your Activity Sharing page on YouTube, connect your Facebook account with the link provided, and choose the actions that you’d like to share (“favourite a video” in our case).

#9 Create an auto-updating calendar of your friends’ birthdays

Remembering everyone’s birthday is a near-impossible feat, but you can always make use of apps to make your life easier. Facebook allows you to export the birthdays of your friends in an always up-to-date webcal format that you can add to Google Calendar and set reminders. To grab this webcal URL, go to the Friends’ Birthdays page, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on the Export Birthdays link. Grab the webcal URL, and add it to Google Calendar (or any other calendar service that you use).

#10 Get Facebook notifications on your desktop

There are many ways to get Facebook notifications on your desktop. Mac OS X users can download the official Facebook Notifier app, that does what its name says. Windows 7 users can download Internet Explorer 9, open facebook.com in a tab, and pin the tab to the taskbar to get notifications. Ubuntu users can add their Facebook account to the built-in Gwibber app to receive desktop notifications.

#11 Stay clear of malware on Facebook with BitDefender SafeGo

Scams and rogue apps are a bit too common on Facebook, so a security app is always good to have. Just add BitDefender SafeGo to your account, and it’ll scan your account for bad links and apps. It also lets you know if you’re publicly sharing stuff that you shouldn’t.

#12 Stop Facebook from tracking you with Ghostery

The web is filled with Facebook Like and Connect buttons these days, and you’re tracked almost everywhere you go mostly for targeted ads). Cross-browser compatible Ghostery protects your privacy by blocking over 250 known tracking and sharing networks from webpages, Facebook being one of them. Unlike some similar services, Ghostery doesn’t break stuff by over-aggressively blocking anything and everything it finds.

#13 Improve your Facebook experience on smartphones with native Facebook apps

Facebook has a perfectly functional mobile site for the smaller screen devices, but did you know that it also provides native apps for the popular smartphone platforms too?! Facebook has apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry. These apps are usually much faster than the mobile site, and also provide better integration and more features. The Facebook app is probably already there on your smartphone, but do look in your respective app store in case it isn’t.

#14 Use Docs.com to efficiently collaborate with your Facebook friends

Facebook doesn’t have to be all play and no work! Docs.com is a fairly good office suite, whose strongest selling point is that it hooks into your Facebook account to provide powerful collaborative features for your projects and documents.

#15 Video chat with your Facebook friends with Skype

Facebook Chat has a lot of limitations, the inability to video chat being one of them. If you’re longing for a video chat session with one of your Facebook pals, all you have to is install Skype, connect your Facebook account to it, wait for your friends to do the same, and get chatting! This works only the Windows and OS X clients of Skype for the moment, with Linux support supposedly coming in future. This is also possible with the TinyChat webapp, although nothing beats Skype in clarity of voice and quality of video calls.

#16 Like any web page on Chrome with the Facebook Likes extension

Facebook Like buttons are everywhere, but what if you do stumble upon an interesting page that has absolutely no sharing buttons? The Facebook Likes Chrome extension lets you like any website you’re on, with two quick mouse clicks.

#17 Use Facebook as a page that you have created

If you have created a Facebook page for your site or product, you can actually use Facebook as that page. It sounds really weird, which it kind of is, but it’s still possible for some reason. To do this, go to the Facebook page for your site / product, and click on the Use Facebook as [Page Name] link on the right sidebar.

#18 Post updates from Facebook to tons of other social sites with Ping.fm

Ping.fm is a useful service that allows to simultaneously update your status across a gazillion social sites. With their Facebook app, you can easily push your Facebook status updates to any other social network that you wish. Add it here.

#19 Backup your Facebook account with Backupify

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll wake up one day and find all your Facebook data missing, but hey nothing is impossible, right?! With Backupify’s free plan, you can rest assured that all your Facebook photos, links, status updates, contacts, events, videos and other stuff are being backed up weekly, and can be retrieved any time you feel like it. The free plan does have a 2GB storage limit, but that should usually be more than enough for your Facebook stuff.

#20 Get quick opinion of your friends with Facebook Questions

Confused whether to get that shiny new iPhone or not? Clueless where to go for dinner? There are these many situations where one wants a quick opinion of his/her friends; and what better way than to have Facebook get those opinions and deliver them back to you! With Facebook Questions, you can quickly create polls and send those to all or some of your friends and wait for them to answer back. Questions is actually effective, unlike similar other services, as neither you nor your friends have to do much (and no one likes working more!). You can turn on Facebook Questions from this page, after which you’ll find it next to the other status updating options.

So that’s it – 20 Facebook tips that can be really useful for you! Hopefully you enjoyed reading it! And if you have own nifty Facebook tips, do share them in the comments as we are always itching to learn more.

Do you already use an emailing list in a tool like Aweber, Mailchimp or Constant Contact or do you have a payment processor like Paypal or Google Checkout that lets you download your customers emails through a CSV? If so, you can use this nifty tip to build friends and fans for free! Yes, FREE.

Download the CSV of from your payment processor or mail list program.

If your list is over 5K, you need to break it up into 5K contact CSVs as 5K is the maximum friend allotment Facebook allows

Create a new Yahoo or Gmail email account

Create a new FB account for each CSV. Use a name that is readily identifiable by your group of contacts like your personal name or your business name.

Import your CSV(s) into the contact manager in your account(s)

In Facebook, add friends by connecting your new email account to your Facebook account.

That’s it! Over the next couple of days/weeks you should have good number of accepts to these various Facebook accounts. From these accounts you can now suggest that your new “friends” like your fan page.

So, what is this tip worth? Let’s say your email list is small, 5K members strong. If each Facebook fan is worth the estimated $2.00 proposed by most pundits and you get a 1K fan return rate on that 5K member list, then you just earned yourself $2,000 worth of new fans for $0 investment!
